Four DUNU Earphones review

After years of reviewing, I have realized an important fact: Many people either cannot afford many of the headphones/earphones I review, or even if they could, there is no way they?re paying hundreds of dollars for excellent sound. I get that. But today, there so many affordable earphones available that can deliver audio which will [...]

An All-Occasion Mobile Signal Booster in a Backpack

A simple AM radio can keep you abreast of events during a disaster. However, a smartphone is ideal for two-way communications, as well as for news and government messages via text message and social networks like Twitter. I've been using a signal booster kit while backpacking around network-sparse, sunny Southern California.

Amazing Video of a Crane Lifting a Car Using Two Phones

You probably knew that it's impossible to pull apart two phonebooks put together with interleaving pages. But did you know that the bond—caused by the mechanical friction of the interleaving pages—is so strong that it can lift an entire car? This video demonstrates exactly that. The best part, however, may be to watch the car fall when they burn the phonebooks. More »

Linux and the GPL: A Storm Erupts

Now that Thanksgiving has come and gone in the land of stars and stripes, it's a pretty safe bet that blood pressures are rising and tensions are high here in the Linux blogosphere. The holiday season is hard upon us, after all, and Linux Girl, for one, has resorted to her preferred coping strategy of warming the barstools down at the blogosphere's seedy Punchy Penguin Saloon.

Kiosked Has A Plan To Change Affiliate Marketing, And It?s Starting To Show Up With Angry Birds Merch

Screen Shot 2012-11-29 at 11.52.20 PMKiosked, a Finnish startup that raised $5.75 million from Rovio's elusive chairman Kaj Hed after bootstrapping for several years, is finally starting to show off what it's been working on. Naturally, the company's products are starting to appear with Angry Birds merchandise on Rovio's Facebook page. Kiosked is trying to change affiliate marketing by making videos and images more interactive with direct links and e-commerce promotions. The company's technology turns any image or video into a storefront where links to products can pop-in from the right-hand side.

Adobe Photoshop Touch optimizes for iPad mini, adds effects, support for pressure-sensitive stylus pens, more

Even though I use Photoshop CS 6 nearly constantly, I'm not a huge fan of Adobe Photoshop Touch. I think they made a lot of bad decisions, from not building a truly native iOS app, to creating an interface that's almost opaque. However, they're Adobe, this is Photoshop, and I'm just an overly opinionated blogger, so for those of you who are all up in the Touch, here's some good news:

Adobe has made some optimizations to better support the iPad mini (likely fixing tap target sizes, though it doesn't say specifically), and adding support for the new generation of pressure sensitive stylus pens like the Pogo Connect, Jot Touch, and JaJa. There are two new effects, Lens Flare and Stamp Pattern (and they helpfully tell you Lens Flare is under the "&" menu, once again proving no menu should ever be labeled "&").

Facebook and Twitter support has been baked in, and access to the last 5 colors is now just a tap away.

Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean binaries added to AOSP

Android 421 Jelly Bean binaries added to AOSP

Barely a fortnight after the Android 4.2 binaries were added to the Android Open Source Project database, here comes Android 4.2.1. It appears as if the files have been uploaded for the Nexus 10, Nexus 7, Galaxy Nexus (Verizon model included), but the Nexus 4 is being omitted for the time being. In short, this opens the doors for custom ROM makers to dig in and update their own wares with the latest and greatest from Google. And come December, the users of those wares will be hugely appreciative of that extra 0.1. Hit the source links to grab the newness.

Motorola Electrify 2 - US Cellular's best budget-friendly holiday pick

Motorola Electrify 2.

We’re officially in the thick of the holiday season, and carriers are hoping now is the time you’ll sign away your wireless soul for the next two years for the promise of a shiny new device. But before you head to the mall, take a deep breath and weigh your options closely — just because it’s that time of year doesn’t mean you have to do anything rash.

For U.S. Cellular customers, 2012 just may be the best holiday season so far. Over the past year, the carrier has been steadily adding more high-end devices to its portfolio. If you’re ready to sign a two-year contract, you’ve got plenty of solid choices: The Galaxy Note 2, the Galaxy S3, and the new Motorola Electrify M are all good devices with best-in-class specs. But at $300, $100, and $100 respectively, these three heavyweights might be just a bit too rich for your blood, especially if you’ve got to fill more than a couple stockings this year. But fear not, USC has some budget-friendly options, the best of which being the Motorola Electrify 2.

Google Research: Most Of The Time, The Smartphone You Search For Is The Smartphone You Buy

Screen Shot 2012-11-29 at 2.54.21 PMGoogle has just posted research findings on how certain factors affect the launch of a smartphone, with data coming directly from search. According to author Matt Seitz, the senior analytical lead at the Google Agency Blog, searches predict smartphone sales "with over 90 percent correlation throughout the launch cycle." With this data, the search giant has uncovered the most important factors that determine whether or not a smartphone will launch into the arms of millions of adoring fans, or to an audience that either doesn't know the phone exists or simply doesn't care.

Sand Trap is a fun and difficult physics maze game

Sand Trap
Sand Trap is one of those games that at first seem too hard to bother with, but when you try to stop playing it you discover you're hooked.

The goal is to get as much sand as you possibly can out of the maze and into the bucket at the bottom of the screen. You need to rotate your maze every which way to get the sand rolling around it. You then try to direct the sand to one of the exits of the maze, and hopefully into the bucket. It took me several tries to actually get sand into the bucket, but that might be due to the fact that I didn't even realize the bucket was there at first. Things improved significantly after that.

As you level up, the mazes get more complicated, with moving parts and other things making your life more difficult. Once you manage to get through all these obstacles and get enough sand into your bucket, you can move on.

As I mentioned, this is not an easy game, but it's highly addictive. The graphics remind me of some long lost game from the 80s, but this just proves that you don't need super graphics and crazy sound to make a game work. There's a soothing guitar track playing in the background and that's it, as far as I could hear, and you can enjoy it just as much with no sound at all.

If you like a fun physics challenge, don't miss out on this one!

Khan Academy Brings Its 3,500+ Educational Videos To The iPhone

Screen shot 2012-11-28 at 7.36.16 PMWhether or not one believes Khan Academy is helping to reinvent education, it's hard to dispute the fact that Khan (and now his team) are an educational video-producing machine, or that the platform continues to diversify. In part, that started with the release of its iPad app in March. This week, Khan Academy brought its 3,600 videos to the iPhone.

Windows Home Server 2011 released to manufacturers

windows home server 2011 whs
Just a little under two months after its release candidate went live, Windows Home Server (WHS) 2011 has been finalized and released into the wild. The new version of Microsoft's slick, do-it-all server OS is a big step forward from its predecessor.

Built on the Windows Server 2008 R2 base, Home Server 2011 features a simpler dashboard, a better backup solution, dead simple remote access to your home computers, and Silverlight-powered remote media streaming. For a more detailed look at what's new in Windows Home Server 2011, you check out Microsoft's official breakdown.

Drive Extender, of course, didn't resurface for the final release of WHS 2011 and that's something a lot of power users are still pretty irked about. Even without Extender, Windows Home Server offers a boatload of useful functionality and might be a good fit for your home network. Manufacturers have already begun building hardware, so you should be able to pick up a device in the very near future.

An evaluation download for Windows Home Server 2011 will be made available in April -- we'll let you know when the links are ready.
